Built of plaster of Paris the replica is 75 per cent in size of the original which is entirely made of white marble. While the original Taj Mahal took 23 years, 20,000 people and 1,000 elephants, its smaller replica in Dubai has been created in three months by 600 people, of which 270 artisans were flown from India.
The massive replica is spread over an area of 400,000sq ft and was built at a cost of $4 million. The look and feel of the original Taj has been recreated quite successfully in this wonderful replica. The look of nakkashi or intricate inlay work on the exterior walls has been masterfully incorporated in the replica. The mystique and aura of the original monument has been recreated to perfection. Looking at the perfect symmetry of the amazing replica against the twilight sky leaves you touched and absolutely enchanted. It’s not just the structure that has been recreated but also the surroundings are built in a fashion similar to the original. The gardens and fountains have been built with great detail, taking care that they are as close to the original as possible. Even the famous marble bench has been built to give a complete feel of the Taj.
Before the replica was finalised, a great deal of research was carried out by the promoters to study every minute detail of the original structure. In fact, almost one year was spent studying the original Taj Mahal in detail. Dedicated tours for schools and colleges to the Taj site were organized at Global Village. A guide has been flown in especially from Agra to take the visitors on a guided tour of the smaller Taj.
If you are lucky you might even spot Shah Jehan and Mumtaz Mahal strolling in the walkways. A couple donned in traditional Mughal attire are present within the structure to welcome guests. The replica opened for public viewing on Tuesday, January 31 and will remain open until April end all days of the week. Various cultural events will be held at the stage built behind the Taj which has similar view from both sides and will give visitors a complete experience of being in the real Taj. Classical dance and musical concerts and several other thematic performances are going to be a part of this bouquet showcasing the rich culture of India.
